"WINNER takes $1,000,000 USD in prize money"

I would write something about this but I've said my thoughts about DOTA2 about a million times now °_° I feel like you're thinking too short term PWNdarz ^^ All my thoughts can be found in the podcast I made about it lol http://www.gosugamers.net/dota/news/16375-dota-talk-special-dota-2-edition
there's some guy breathing REALLY LOUD! lol
But ya, it's not like there is only going to be one tournament...DotA is already played by maannnny people around the world, and in my opinion will take the majority of HoN players back, as well as some of the LoL players.

I changed my mind, lol, I dunno, I think coL could do well to start a DotA2 team, but I think it depends on the game's success in NA, as DotA is not proven at all as an esports in NA. After all, coL is an american organization.

Just some thought, not sure if it's true or not,
but I think the reason DotA wasn't taken seriously as a competitive game *in North America*, was because they didn't receive the acknowledgment from blizzard or support (a mistake on their part)
Not only that but because it wasn't it's own separate game and you had to buy wc3 so no one was really seeing any money go into dota because there was nothing to buy
Now that dota2 is going to be its own game, have its graphics updated (to look pretty for the audience and players), have reconnect features if you disconnect, and just the fact that it's made by valve, imo will help it become a giant in the competitive scene, maybe even bigger than starcraft 2, but only time will tell.
The main reason why I think that dota2 will top sc2, is because it's a team game, and the audience loves to watch people working together in synergy to achieve a common goal.

You are sorely mistaken if you think DotA isn't taken seriously as a competitive game. A team in China was just bought for 6 million USD. It's one of the most played games in Europe, and there have been so many tournaments throughout the years. SMM in Malaysia had a 32k USD prize pool last year, which was huge before StarCraft started getting these absolutely ridiculous sums of money. Aside from that, it also had viewers, lots of them. The aforementioned SMM tournament had 25k viewers on stream, which is for a 10 year old game!
DotA is still played and the community is still very much alive, just look at gosugamers. In the US, for reasons that are beyond the scope of this post, DotA died. That's okay, there are still some cool people coming out of there (DeMoN for instance), but the focus for DotA right now is Europe and Asia. I hope it get revitalized in NA, and I don't see a reason why it shouldn't be, but even without that DotA would still be fine. I actually did a podcast on this exact issue too lol, but yeah we were also on the same line of reasoning as you. Reconnect, real servers, cross-realm support that hopefully won't lag much and pretty graphics should help the game get globalized immensely. I really do believe it can be the next big thing in ESPORTS.

I mean think about this long term. It's more than just the $1,000,000 (maybe more?) prize pool. This game has been extremely popular despite very little help from the outside scene, because people love the game so much. It's actually amazing how long it's survived despite the very little amount of money people get for their efforts. The fact that the game has lasted as long as it has, and more and more tournaments popping up with bigger prize pools is enough to draw attention, especially with the new tournament for dota2 coming out. The fact is that dota is here to stay, and with dota2 coming out, things are only going to get better.

I meant competitive in North America. :)
And I know about demon lol I used to play in dxd with him before he went pro

umm, i think the HoN team said they were going to play both DotA and HoN because the games are identical, i made a thread earlier this week about dota2 but it was taken down because the information i was looking for was already there... HoN team will be playing both the HoN team originally came from high level of DotA playing and experience so yeah..

dunno about NA, but I'll give you some interesting info:
Sweden is the only (or one of the few, not 100% sure about this) countries where HoN is bigger than LoL.
the swedish eSport site rakaka made and poll to see witch game the swedish people thinks will be the winner of the esport war.
the results where (just under 900 people answered):
- 85% Dota 2
- 9% League of Legends
- 6% Heroes of Newerth
I think this is pretty clear... and when you add the rest of Europe + Asia (where DotA is HUGE) you get a quite big scene already. NA is free to join the fun :P

here is what they are at the moment
LoL - Trying to make money more than making it better competitively and drifting for true dota style play. Even though there is a lot of teams that are competitive still no big lan events have picked up lol without riot paying for everything.
HoN- Pure dota carbon copy with advances on play from original, less players but a lot more skilled needed than LoL and more innovating in NA from its almost nonexistant dota scene
dota 2 - Basicly if done right it could sweep all these games under the rug if takes original dota to a new level like sc2 did to sc1. Imo Hon will almost be all gone due to most people wanting to play a new moba game exactly like dota play hon so new dota=switch, lol on the other hand more than half the players are small children and others who dont even know what dota is and just play it for fun arent very good(competitive) and like how its going towards wow route of having different style areans like dominion (yuck).
In all i think majority of people who really like moba games will play dota 2(if it isnt a complete flop) and LoL will live on as that ugly step child and hon will most likely die.

Why did you say yuck to Dominion? Seems like it could be fun and a change of pace from your traditional 3 lanes.

I think for the most part we can all agree on this.
People who play HoN more than likely know about dota or came from dota.
Many people who play LoL have never even heard of dota.
HoN will disappear almost completely, and LoL will continue to be played by "non competitive" players, or players who don't even know that dota 2 is even coming out, that or the avg LoL player will have such a hard time adjusting to Dota2 that they will just come back to LoL.
There are exceptions to the rule, but for the most part, I'd say that HoN is going to fade away, and LoL will continue, but Dota 2 will completely dominate the market everywhere.

just announced this will be an annual tournament held by valve(Awesome!) and as a game not even in open beta yet it looked 100x better than hon and lol, and they only really showed what was in original dota and has been upgraded and nothing of the new heroes, modes, items, etc. Riot makes a dumb arathi basin map and trys to comeback with 5 million over 30 tournaments, silly riot make a good game.

PUDGE and sniper for life

yeah i totally am a dota noob... i played it maybe 3x in WC3 (i was a ladder player) and wasn't very into it, but dota2 will convert me i think!
You have to give Riot credit though, willing to put all that money to fund and publicise their game. Valve wont do half of what Riot has done for its competitive nature. Riot pays these teams to play its game, Valve I dont see doing that. I personally think League of Legends really deserves the spot over Dota 2 just for all the things Riot is doing with the esports community. Valve held its tournament, nothing special there it was just another tournament. Riot has funded these teams to travel the world playing their game. That's what I call commitment to their game and esports as a whole.

i have to disagree as their format is to make money of kids on skins and the gameplay is so bad and basicly you can say who wins before unless someone just sucks and has done nothing for esports as they have to pay venues to hold their game which no other game that i know of does as people dont respect a game that is so simply learned in a few games as i learned all the characters in a few games as they are all archetypes and none are unique
They are willing to put the money in to bring players around the world to play their game. If you cant respect the fact that they believe that much in their game, then why even bother with any part of esports. Most of these companies wouldnt put the funding for teams to play.
They deserve their spot in esports, plain and simple.

Just to give you guys an idea of where we are coming from half of my team comes from high level competitive dota. We've all been playing in the dota2 beta & we like it but we still consider hon a good game just because the gameplay is significantly faster paced & more active. That being said the people balancing the game at s2 do not really have a deep understanding of the game and do a pretty poor job of balancing. When we lose hon games entirely because of blatantly overpowered heroes it gets pretty irritating. In the long term we will probably switch to d2 unless s2 gets there act together but I think hon will still survive regardless just because of the fact that its f2p and its a middle ground (sorta... obviously leaning towards dota) between dota & LoL.
why would we start a team now? only the top 12 teams in the world were invited >.> its not something you can just jump into =p
Gotta keep in mind most of the active mid/high+ level NA players transferred to hon just because the dota NA scene was dying or was dead(depending on when you made the switch). Icefrog was actually looking for an NA team to go to the International but the majority of the top NA teams/players that could have gone and actually competed all transferred to hon. I am pretty damn confident our team could compete at high level d2 with some months of practice, I mean the games are fundamentally the same just the heroes/metagame are different.

E-Sports don't have levels of play like this (sure there's the CAL and CPL but it doesn't work the same way). Either you are competing or you're not. I think to be considered a sport, MLG should remedy this by incorporating a minor league where players are farmed from to competing in the majors. This would be the only way to get into the majors is to be invited, Free Duplicate File Finder (http://www.ashisoft.com) not simply sign up and paying a fee.
