I figured this would be the best place to post about virus protection. I need to know the best free virus scan program. I need to be able to delete the things it detects also, pretty self-explanatory.

Thanks in advance!

Avira AntiVirus - I swear to you the best. I got stung pretty badly with a Virus, and ever since this program has been by my side.

Eh there's no such thing as a good free anti-virus program. Most will let you scan but will make you pay to have them deleted or quarantined. Best you can do is reformat.

I beg to differ. I've used Avast! and Avira and they've deleted/quarantined infected files. They're free too.

There is an 8 month promotional thing for Avira AntiVirus Premium, which is amazing.
Can't find the link to 8 months, but just by googling found this one, supposively a 6 month promotional.

I've been using avast for a year now and have no complaints. It even detected virus's that a trail version of Norton couldn't.

Go Anandtech.com forums and read the security thread - the AVComparisons website where professional testing is done - Avira and Avast when used properly are just as good as paid.

I've been tracking it for the past year, and while they trade the #1 places at virus prevention, when you do a scheduled scan they still all detect 99.5% to 99.9% of threats.

Just remember - no anti virus can ever reach such levels during resident operation - you get between 10% to 50% detection regardless of whether you pay or not. You MUST perform the scheduled scans for an Anti-Virus to do it's job.

Personally I started paying for AVG, and Ive never had any problems with viruses, spyware etc. for as long as I've had it.

Umm, for free I'd go with AVG, though I hate it, for free users it's pretty decent.
