scrims on de_dust
grand matches at CPL
TSN casting well
prank calls on gamesnet
I'm nostalgic for the past.
Can we not bring back the tournaments and community? Are they gone forever? What happens to eSports. It's been bleed profusely since 2006 and as far as I can see, it's almost dead.
I just saw the movie There Will Be Blood, and I think the message of the movie is quite simple: life is a journey, not a destination. If you work your entire life to achieve something you may become disappointed with the award. People have been way to hung up on making eSports professionally recognized that they have given up some of the greatest aspects of it in order to be noticed, in order to achieve their dreams (read: CGS). And what do we have to show for it now?
In the past it seemed that people were much more excited to watch and hear matches, and CPL/WCG were epic events that everyone attended. We don't have much excitement going on now. I worked on the WCG USA National Finals this past year and it just didn't seem to have the same energy, but I assume WCG USA Finals weren't the same as CPL.
I did go to WSVG 2007 Summer though, and it definitely didn't feel the same. The LAN was there, but the community wasn't as excited as before. It was a loud event, and it surely had some exciting features, but it just, didn't have the underground/tight nit feel it had before - but what do I know, these are the only two events I've been too.

the cgs destroyed all of this.
the cgs destroyed all of this.
That's somewhat harsh since the CGS barely played a factor in any of that. lol

I miss some of these things too
I actually miss when there wasnt as many shit talkers in cs
I also miss playing out scrims seems everyone plays to 16 which defeats the purpose of a scrim which is practice not to see who wins.
I miss cs before steam came out :(
and finally I miss cs movies without techno and seizure inducing effects and colors

Yeah, shit has defiantly changed. I remember those winamp radio stations with IRC channels that used to do prank calls and requests and shit, used to be a lot of fun.
I remember waiting anxiously for MONTHS for the summer or winter CPL to watch the competition, that never happens anymore. I hear about tournaments a few days before and am only interested in a few teams.
Like you said, the community really fucking sucks now, and I honestly think it's just the new generation of gamers who don't respect or don't know the history of e-sports.
Although it's not fair to remember all the good shit in the past, because there were plenty of issues back in the day.

i played mhzt the other day in a scrim, they called me a cheater and left 10th round :(
Thats wonderful and has absolutely nothing do with me, however I thank you for sharing.
Really though, why are most of us playing CS? Most of us aren’t making money doing this, yet we spend time practicing and scrimming. I guess we play for the fun of it, huh? No one likes to be in a pug and have their ringer leave – it’s annoying, disrespectful, and negatively affects the experience of nine other human beings. And just because you don’t personally know them doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be treated like one. No one playing a pick up game just walks off the basketball court without finding another player to stand in for him. You shouldn’t act differently when playing CS just because it’s easier to escape.
Another thing, if you’re hunting around #findscrim and get a few replies to your ad, have the decency to tell the people you’re not scrimming that you already found one, so they aren’t waiting around in their server for the next 10 minutes telling their teammates “they’ll be here soon.” And for the love of God, don’t give two teams your server info and kick the one that gets there last; no one likes having their time wasted. I think a good, general mentality to have is to be more concerned about the well-being of the people around you than the well-being of yourself.
And what’s with all the trash talking? My high school Cross Country coach would tell is before every race, “If you lose, don’t say anything and maybe no one will notice. If you win, don’t say anything, because they already have.” I think this says a lot. If you’re rolling a team 12-2 while playing T-side Nuke, the team you’re playing has already figured out that you are better than them. There is no need to make yourself look like an ass by saying things like “lolumad?” or “rofl terrible” in MM1. Maybe if you don’t say anything they will respect you rather than think you’re team is comprised of a bunch of a-holes.
And if you’re losing, you think someone’s hacking, or think the server registration stinks, keep it to yourself. You saying it aloud will only cause tempers to flare and make you look like a person looking for excuses. Aside from moving to a new server, nothing is going to fix the registration. Just play out the game and play somewhere else next time.
As far as I’m concerned the only things that should ever be typed in MM1 (and even these aren’t appreciate by everyone) are things like “ns”, “wow that nade raped us”, or “snuck up on you didn’t I? =p”. Notice that none of these things are actually offensive. When talking in MM1, you should either be complimentary or be making a neutral comment.
Seriously, guys… we wonder why our community is dying, then go into our servers and make fun of new players and talk trash to people we don’t even know. If someone is just getting into the scrimming/pugging scene, give them tips, don’t tell them to “go uninstall.” Granted new players can sometimes be immature and annoying. If this is the case, either politely tell them to be more mature or ignore them, don’t abuse them. You were twelve once too.
This has gone on way too long. The main point of this was: be nice, put others before yourself, treat people like you would want to be treated, and help new members to the community.

I agree 100%
as much as I might dislike the people in charge of the CPL, the only thing I want back IS the CPL. The way they were run, the environment, casters, everything.
Trust me dude, I'm as nostalgic as you are =(

Agreed 100%, and also I miss the CPL days too, watching matches was so exciting back then.
I don't know if it will ever be rebuilt. There's too many factions, too much carelessness, no excitement, no tournaments.
Maybe if some type of CPL event happened again with lots of money things would get moving.
maybe theres hope as far as coverage, after watching the interview with ESFI it sounds like they have a good plan (http://www.complexitygaming.com/index.php?c=news&id=311)... Hopefully their event coverage/shoutcasting will be up to par with the old TsN (oh how I miss TsN :()
also, after going through the tour at http://www.esfiworld.com/ it sounds like these guys really have their stuff together. They have some excellent ideas for eSports coverage, I'm looking foward to the site launch, I just hope they haven't bitten off more than they can chew.

You sound like an advertisement, and yet I can't dispute anything you say. If their site is like that, they will dominate big time. As for the casting, I hope they work with all the casting organizations already out there, or somehow centralize the community on that aspect.

I miss playing with legit people. Not having to leave a scrim just about every time, before the rounds are over. Because you just know. Also miss playing with CAL-I players back in the day. With out a ego. Now it seems most of them have to huge of a ego. I said most not all.

I miss CPL the most. I lived 40 minutes away from where it was held every Summer/Winter and I don't think anything else has ever gotten me so excited. I remember counting down the days until it started and when I get there I'd see all these professional CS players I idled and not knowing what to do when I saw them in person. It was truly an awesome experience that I will never forget. I'm going to do anything in my power to help grow up the e-sports community and surpass where it was back in the day.
